Meet Our Superheroes: Megan Riel

We have a fabulous team at KELL Partners – some may call us geeks, [and we’re ok with that] but we like to call our team members superheroes. This regular series will highlight a KELL team member. This post will focus on one of our Project Managers, Megan Riel.

mrielWhat’s your favorite thing about working with nonprofits?

I really enjoy helping them to meet their mission. That’s pretty much why I went into the nonprofit world. Working through KELL is a way for me to help a lot of different nonprofits, and to help them help even more people.

Do you volunteer with any nonprofits? Why those organizations?

My husband and I are volunteer Weekend to Remember Directors for an organization called FamilyLife. We went to a Weekend to Remember marriage retreat a couple of years ago. We both really believe in the power of the family unit and families staying together. After we attended, we both wanted to help other families to discover these tools to strengthen their own relationships. I also volunteer at our church primarily on the missions outreach team.

There are so many interesting and important missions. I love learning about them and then helping them to get their data organized so that they can advance those missions.

I am a volunteer with the Animal Protection Society of Durham (NC), The Choral Society of Durham, and PEO (Philanthropic Education Organization) International. All three really reflect my interests. I’m an animal lover, I love to sing, and I volunteer with P.E.O. because I’m interested in making sure women have access to education.

Their missions. Most people working in nonprofits have a big heart, and that’s why they do what they do. There’s definitely a different vibe than the for-profit world.

Kell provides us with paid days off for volunteer service, which is really awesome. I’m fairly new, so I’m still trying to figure out what I want to do with that time. In the meantime, I am very involved with my kid’s school organizations. I’m on the board of my daughter’s dance team, and I help out with the choir’s booster club. Giving back to organizations that directly affect my children is huge. It shows my children that those things are important to me and, therefore, it becomes important to them. I think sometimes people are too quick to complain about things without offering to be a part of the solution. So, leading by example, hopefully I’m showing my children that if you don’t like something you can certainly take some action to change it.

One of the things I like is that they are very ambitious — when you talk with them about what their goals are, it’s always something very inspiring. They’re trying to change STEM education for underprivileged children, or trying to increase international understanding and bring about world peace, or something equally as Earth-shattering.

It’s nice to work with people that are motivated like that.

A little bit. I’ve done some introductory training with an animal shelter here in Austin. I also recently adopted a rescue dog, so he’s occupying a lot of my volunteer time right now.

The nonprofit world is one of the last holdouts for the kind of people crazy enough to think that they can make a positive difference in the world...and to actually try. I love that. Spending time with people passionate about what they do, particularly when it's helping others, makes life a whole lot richer. I try not to take that for granted.

My nonprofit roots are in Atlanta, Georgia where I served for many years with an amazing organization called She Is Safe. They work to prevent, rescue and restore women and girls from abuse and exploitation in high risk places around the world. Being a part of such significant life change is hard to beat.

As a newbie to Austin, I'm excited to begin exploring local opportunities to serve.

KELL Partners Judi SohnWhat’s your favorite thing about working with nonprofits?

I love helping organizations get efficient using technology. If an organization has a clear business process and is making every second in the back office count, that’s more time and more money they have for their mission. When I help an organization change a process from something that was entirely manual in an Excel spreadsheet or Google Doc to something that flows smoothly and accurately from end to end in Salesforce, it makes my heart sing.

KELL Partners Samantha HigdonWhat’s your favorite thing about working with nonprofits?

My absolute favorite thing about working with nonprofits are the passionate, hardworking people who work for them. Nonprofit professionals are multi-hat wearing, experts in just about everything. I am fortunate that I get to witness these folks in action, and see the mark they are leaving on the world.

I currently volunteer with the Breast Cancer Resource Centers of Texas, an organization dedicated to providing education, support, and resources to those diagnosed with breast cancer. I began working with BCRC six years ago because know how difficult a cancer diagnosis can be for a family. I saw the true impact that BCRC’s mission has in the community and I couldn’t help but jump right in.

I am also featured in the Tobacco Prevention’s Coalition’s “Live Tobacco-Free Austin Campaign.” Their ad series, Real Tobacco Stories, features people who have lost loved ones to lung cancer. I volunteered to tell my story in hopes that it would encourage Texans to quit smoking.

KELL Partners Eric DaytonWhat’s your favorite thing about working with nonprofits?

My favorite thing is when the work I do helps a nonprofit worry less about the process behind their work, so they have more time to focus on doing what they do best. I hope the work I do builds the capacity of the nonprofit, so they can ultimately help more people despite all the challenges that nonprofits face today (like constantly shrinking resources).

Do you volunteer with any nonprofits? Why those organizations?

I've volunteered for a lot of different nonprofits, but my favorite causes work in international development in sub-Saharan Africa. My two favorite experiences have been serving as an AmeriCorps VISTA for a year in Phoenix, AZ, and volunteering at an orphanage in Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa in 2010. After recently moving to Austin, I am still searching for my ideal nonprofit to volunteer with.

I love working with nonprofits because every organization has a different cause and mission. Building the best Salesforce configuration to allow nonprofits to get more than they thought they could out of their data is very rewarding. Every client is different and every configuration is different, it never gets old!

I really enjoy volunteering for organizations that focus on broadening interest and availability of technology to students. It’s always a great feeling to see firsthand the impact that technology can have on students and increasing the awareness of future careers in technology. Recently, I volunteered at the BEST Robotics Competition and at the Latinitas Tech Chica Conference.

I am a member of the First Book-San Diego’s advisory board. First Book provides access to new books for children in need. Books were a huge part of my childhood and I feel that everyone should have a chance to develop a love of reading regardless of social or economic status.
