Introducing Fund Allocations SmartPack

Fund Allocations for Nonprofits

It’s no secret that at KELL Partners, we think the Nonprofit Starter Pack (NPSP) – especially with all the great improvements in version 3 – is pretty awesome. But there are some key areas of functionality that we felt were essential to an organization’s success on NPSP. This was especially true for organizations that were moving from Convio’s Common Ground.

We took the basic functionality in the Starter Pack and built our Fund Allocations SmartPack to address these often critical requirements:

  • Defining the different Funds an organization allocates gifts towards
  • Splitting donations to multiple Funds
  • Exporting transactions to a general ledger, such as QuickBooks
  • Once exported to general ledger, locking transactions in Salesforce from further editing
  • Allowing for a reversal process so posted transactions can be edited and then reposted

Should Your Nonprofit Pick NGO Connect or the Nonprofit Starter Pack?

Should Your Nonprofit Pick roundCause or the Nonprofit Starter Pack?

When the Salesforce.com Foundation launched Salesforce1 for Nonprofits in May 2015, it marked a fundamental shift in their product strategy for nonprofit organizations. One that was long overdue. In doing this they put NGO Connect (NGOC) at the core of this strategy and gave a major overhaul to their free offering of the Nonprofit Starter Pack 3 -- and is pretty awesome.

So what are the differences between the two? And how can you pick the right one for your nonprofit?

Those are great questions. Both products offer great solutions. But the best one for you depends on what your organization needs. This is no quick or simple answer, because every organizations’ needs are different. This is why we developed an interactive graphic that you can use to weight which functional areas are most important, then compare how these needs are met by NGOC vs. NPSP.

Below is a very brief overview of the main functionality of each and how they compare. To learn more, click here and get your own version of this graphic and download a more detailed comparison of each.

Advice We Wish We Had When We Were Salesforce Admin Newbies

Advice We Wish We Had When We Were Salesforce Admin Newbies

If you’re new to the Salesforce platform, you’re probably feeling more than a little overwhelmed. So much to learn and it may all seem more complicated than it should be. Where do you start? How do you figure out what you should or shouldn’t be doing? Don’t be discouraged!

I recently had the pleasure of taking the organization I used to work for on as a client. I set up their first Salesforce instance in 2006! I was thrilled to have the opportunity to go back and correct mistakes I made and put in to place best practices I had learned only after years of experience. This time around I simplified profiles and reduced a cumbersome acknowledgment process down to a few clicks! I knew how Salesforce would be used day-to-day and thought as much about how Salesforce would be USED as I did about how to get the data in place.

So I asked my KELL colleagues, who all come from prior experience working with Salesforce at nonprofits…

Our Favorite Improvements for Nonprofits in the Summer ‘14 Salesforce Release

Three times a year, Salesforce.com rolls out new features to its users. Most of these new features are enabled automatically (you don’t have to do anything!). Although there are some new features that are optional, and therefore have to be enabled by your System Administrator.

If you’re new to the releases, here’s a quick FAQ on new releases:

How do I know when a new release has been rolled out in my instance of Salesforce?

Salesforce Summer 14 Release for Nonprofits

Unless you’re using a custom logo, you'll see a new icon on the top left when you log in to Salesforce. For Summer ’14, it’s a mask and snorkel. You'll also see the orange "Discover Summer ‘14” link on the top right side of your homepage. If you click that link, it will take you to additional resources like videos and the Release Notes, letting you know what’s new. Here’s a link to the Summer ’14 Release Notes.

I work for a nonprofit, and the release notes talk about a lot of features that don’t apply to me. How do I know which features are most exciting for nonprofits?

You can always come and check out KELL Labs, or visit other nonprofit community resources to see what other nonprofits are saying. The Salesforce.com Foundation also hosts a webinar for each release, where they show examples of the new features along with use cases for nonprofits.

We attended the Foundation’s webinar and took some notes so you don’t have to. Here are our favorite features from Summer ’14 that nonprofits can use:
