What is Nonprofit Starter Pack 3 ? It’s the next generation of the Nonprofit Starter Pack, developed by the Salesforce Foundation (code name is Cumulus). It’s so much more than just an app upgrade. It represents a fundamental shift in how the Salesforce Foundation is handling its free offering for nonprofits.

WARNING: mega geek-out ahead J

Before NPSP 3, the Nonprofit Starter Pack was a group of 6 separate packages offered by the Foundation as a way for nonprofits to get started on the Salesforce platform. For geeks like us, it could sometimes be frustrating to customize around the Starter Pack due to code firing (or not firing) unpredictably and the rather long delay between releases. Some packages, like Affiliations, haven’t received an update in 3.5 years!

I love helping organizations get efficient using technology. If an organization has a clear business process and is making every second in the back office count, that’s more time and more money they have for their mission. When I help an organization change a process from something that was entirely manual in an Excel spreadsheet or Google Doc to something that flows smoothly and accurately from end to end in Salesforce, it makes my heart sing.

Online donation pages are vitally important to an organization and here at KELL we have the opportunity to look at a ton of them and help our clients make them better. Not everyone has the desire to spend their spare time reading human interaction design guidelines, usage metrics and the latest internet research on where browser/mobile standards are heading.

Luckily for you, we’re that nerdy and have distilled some of the results into a few simple things to keep in mind.

 

1. Avoid distracting the user

This may seem like a no-brainer, but it can often be tempting to overlook. When a visitor lands on your donation page the last thing you want to do is give them extra opportunities to go elsewhere. Things like a Twitter feed, latest posts from your blog, or other interactive elements whose general purpose is to get people to click on them should not be presented to the visitor until after they finished with the form.

What does Salesforce1 for Nonprofits Really Mean?

On Thursday May 29th Sandra and I attended the Salesforce1 World Tour in Washington, DC. The event was advertised as InnovationForce +SocialGood but the main purpose was to launch Salesforce1 for Nonprofits.

What Is Salesforce1 for Nonprofits?

That’s the big question. Let me start by explaining what it is NOT. It is not a new product. There is no new release, new version, new functionality, new app to download – nada.

This is bigger than a product. Much bigger. If you’ve been following the Salesforce for Nonprofits market over the past 7 years closely like we have, the true meaning behind this announcement is huge and long overdue.

The bumper sticker answer is this – Salesforce1 for Nonprofits is a new product strategy for the Salesforce Foundation. It’s a strategy that has been carefully designed to provide “wall to wall” value for nonprofits – and there’s nothing else like it in the nonprofit market. The Foundation calls this strategy “The Connected Nonprofit”.

The strategy is built upon four pillars:

  1. Deliver better programs and services
  2. Communicate more effectively
  3. Engage and strengthen their community
  4. Raise more funds
